Penalty Units |
Penalty units
are used in Commonwealth legislation as a convenient way to specify
an amount of pecuniary penalty/fine without having to refer to an
actual dollar amount. |
The dollar amount
of a penalty unit is fixed across Commonwealth legislation by the
following definition in section 4AA of the Crimes
Act 1914 (Cth): |
4AA Penalty units |
|
(1) |
In a law of the Commonwealth or a
Territory Ordinance, unless the contrary intention appears: |
|
|
penalty unit means
$110. |
|
This allows for
pecuniary penalties to be adjusted across Commonwealth legislation
by changing the amount in the Crimes Act only. |
